Four Dog Grooming Basics to Know Of

Blog

If you are thinking about bringing a new dog home, or you already have a family dog, but haven't been that great about keeping them groomed, then you will want to know what you can do to keep them clean and healthy. Dog grooming is essential for your dog's health and will also ensure that the smell of dog isn't as bad. Here are four dog grooming basics to start enforcing:

  1. Hair Brushing: Brushing your dog's fur is important for helping them to maintain a healthy coat all year round. How often you brush your dog's fur depends on what type of coat they have. For example, if you have a long-haired dog, then you are probably going to want to brush their fur daily. This will help prevent matting and tangled hair whereas if they are a medium-haired dog or short-haired, then you are going to be able to brush them weekly or every few weeks without a problem.
  2. Trim Nails: Trimming your dog's nails is really important for their health because you don't want them to have to deal with the problem of overgrown nails. You also don't want to have to worry about your dog scratching themselves too hard whenever they have an itch. It's important that you have your vet teach you how to trim your dog's nails properly and safely to prevent cutting too far down, which can be really painful for your dog.
  3. Bathing: Dogs should be bathed regularly. Typically, it is recommended that dogs are bathed monthly and only washed with shampoo that is intended for dog use. If bathing is too much for you to do in your home either because you do not have a tub or you have a difficult time preventing your dog from running around the house getting everything wet, then you can always take them to the groomers who will bathe them, cut their coat, and even trim their nails for you. For many, this option is more convenient.
  4. Ear Care: Cleaning your dog's ears is also really important, but, of course, if you aren't comfortable doing this on your own, you can always have your vet do it for you. This is especially important if you have a dog who is prone to having ear problems.

By knowing these dog grooming basics, you can be sure that you help in giving your dog the best care possible that is going to keep them happy and healthy. For assistance, go to a pet groomer like Abraxas Pet Resort.

dealing with a dog's separation anxiety

I have opened my home to foster dogs for the past eight years. Many of the dogs that come into my home are well-behaved companions that just need to find a permanent home. Other dogs, well, let's just say that they are not meant to be left alone anywhere in the house. These dogs suffer from separation anxiety and begin acting out the minute that I leave their sight. These are the dogs that I take to a day care center anytime I have to leave my house. If you have a dog that doesn't do well on his own, this blog will give you several tips for making him more comfortable and eventually put a stop to the behavior.
